Highlights:

  • Kinder Scout: The highest spot in the Peak District. This mountain doesn't have a single point at the top, but is an expansive marshy bog. Technically, Kinder Scout is a mountain, by quite some margin. With easier routes up, it's a great first mountain climb for hikers.
  • The Woolpacks: A bizarre stone formation straddling the ridgeline on Kinder Scout. Best seen in fog or low cloud, you'll feel like you are wandering an alien world with these ominous shapes looming around you.
  • Mam Tor: A high trig point for the peak baggers among you. Accessible from Edale by a steep but technically easy ascent. A popular spot with tourists, walking the ridgeline presents beautiful views down the Hope Valley.
  • Broken Road: Below Mam Tor is an old collapsed road. An area that makes you feel like you are wandering a dystopian landscape. Well recommended for the vibe.

Amenities:

  • Parking: Parking is available in the town, but is largely pay and display.
  • Toilets: Many cafés/pubs have easy access toilets. Walks into the Peaks will take you away from anywhere with toilets, but passing through the villages will allow you to use café toilets.
  • Pubs: Two brilliant pubs are located in Edale. The Old Nag's Head and Rambler's Inn. Both are great pubs to end your walk in.
  • Café: There is a great little café, The Penny Pot, located next to the station which provides Wi-Fi and a good hot drink should you be caught in the rain.

Reachable by train

Train

Edale is reachable by train from Manchester Piccadilly. It is one of the most scenic train journeys through country parks and the Peak District. The service is hourly, and runs early and late. There is a café at the station, and it's next to a pub. It is a longer journey, at about 45 mins, however the beer garden nearby is well worth getting the train to enjoy.
