Overview

Entwistle is a small village, with one great pub and many, many great walks. Nested between reservoirs and moorland, it's a hidden gem of the West Pennines. The single platform station feels a long way from Manchester Victoria, and stepping out into sunshine, a gentle breeze and nothing but the sound of the train leaving is half the reason to visit here.

Best Views:

  • The Wader: A small sculpture, located on the bank of Entwistle reservoir, marks a great place for birdwatching, a romantic picnic, or a good old main character moment for anyone. Easily reached, in beautiful surroundings, it's a good spot to head for.
  • Bradshaw Brook Viaduct: A viaduct over Wayoh reservoir. You will have crossed it if you took the train. A spot worth seeing in any weather.
  • Entwistle Memorial Forest: A beautiful and reserved spot. Here, locals memorialise their loved ones with newly planted trees. The small decorations left by loved ones and small, unobtrusive plaques lend themselves to thought and contemplation.
  • Cheetham Close Stone Circle: Atop of Turton Heights, you can enjoy expansive views of Winter Hill, a prominent feature of the West Pennine Moors. The hill and trig point here, are especially striking when covered in snow during the winter months.

Amenities:

  • Walking and Hiking Trails: Well-marked trails suitable for all levels, offering beautiful views and access to the surrounding countryside.
  • Picnic Areas: Designated spots perfect for enjoying a meal amidst nature’s beauty.
  • Fishing Spots: Areas around the reservoirs ideal for anglers looking to catch local fish.
  • Strawbury Duck: The railway pub offers refreshments and food, providing a good place to unwind.
  • Parking Facilities: The pub has a parking area, but the roads nearby are country lanes. Take care and plan ahead should you drive.

Getting there

Reachable by train

Train

Entwistle is reachable from Manchester Victoria station. The trip will generally take around 30 minutes. The route is run every hour, or every half hour in peak times. It is a fairly scenic journey once you pass Bolton, and my preferred method of travel for this location.

Reachable by car

Car

There is limited parking by the station pub. The area close to the station is difficult to reach. Several of the reservoirs nearby have pay and display parking for visitors.
